Spencer firefighters recognized

SPENCER ó Several members of the Spencer Fire Department were recognized recently for their service.
Firefighter Wayne Comer received his lieutenant’s badge and Gray Grubb received his captain’s badge. Both Comer and Grubb have been with the department since 2003.
Comer is a sergeant with the Spencer Police Department and Grubb is employed by the City of Salisbury Fire Department.
In December, the department held its annual Christmas and Awards Dinner. There, five-year service pins were presented to Grubb and Comer, and a 20-year service award was presented to Capt. Tony Bean.
Firefighter Nick Brazee received the Rookie of the Year Award and Bean was presented the Veteran Firefighter of the Year Award.
The Spencer Fire Department has 31 members, 20 of whom are volunteers. In 2008, the department received 488 calls for service.
