Son of Marcus Garvey to speak her April 18

Dr. Julius W. Garvey of New York will speak on “Family Unity and Meaningful Values” in an appearance April 18 at the Holiday Inn.
He is the son of Marcus Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association,who rose to prominence in the early 20th century for advocating that black Americans move to Africa in what became known as the Colonist Movement. Marcus Garvey died in 1940.
Julius Garvey, a surgeon, lectures on African history and culture and on his father’s legacy. He is on the staff of Long Island Jewish Medical Center and was formerly chief of thoracic surgery at Queens Hospital Center.
He is an associated professor of clinical surgery at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine and has published several papers and spoken at conferences on his area of expertise.
He has served on the Board for the Education of People of African-American Ancestry, the Zumbi Foundation, The Brotherhood, the Marcus Garvey Committee International and the Read Across Jamaica Foundation.
Over the years, he has worked in conjunction with several ministries and the University of the West Indies on issues concerning the education of Jamaican children, the building of schools and other topics. He has built a school in Jamaica and a school and medical clinic in Senegal.
He has also worked with the Department of Correction in New York concerning rehabilitation in prisons.
His visit is sponsored by Mt. Nebo Memorial Church of God in Christ, which is holding the event to celebrate black history and the 93rd birthday of Mattie P. Roberts.
The event starts with a social hour at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon.
