Rowan County celebrates Black History Month

N.C. Transportation Museum
– The museum in downtown Spencer opens its newest exhibit, “The North Carolina Lining Bar Gangs,” Feb. 24.
Lining bar gangs consisted of several men who laid railroad track onto rail ties. The exhibit is part of the museum’s Black History Month program but will remain a permanent addition.

Livingstone College
– Dr. Stanley Elliott, vice president for Student Affairs, will present, “Who Am I?” Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Wiley Lash Room of Ballard Hall.
– Harris Residence Hall will present a Black History Month Showcase in the Wiley Lash Room of Ballard Hall at 7 p.m. on Feb. 19.
– The Division of Student of Affairs will present “Grassroots Efforts for Sudan” Feb. 19 at noon in the Rowan Aggrey Board Room. The program will be facilitated by Karen Puckett from Sudan.
– The Empowering Scholars Program hosts Black Cinema Day 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Andrew Carnegie Library.
– The college’s Theatre Arts Department is sponsoring a tribute to courageous African-Americans Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Tubman Little Theatre.

Koontz Elementary
– The school will host a Black History Month fashion show Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. in the multipurpose room. Participants including students, teachers and staff will model traditional African wear from Liberia and other countries.
School instructor Elizabeth Wah, of Liberia, is organizing the event, which is open to the public.
