A fire at West Rowan High School was reported in the gymnasium shortly after 2 p.m. today. Students had gone home at 1 p.m. after testing.
Firefighters were called to the scene to ensure the fire had been put out. They were on the scene for about 2 hours.
The fire started while workers were replacing the tar roof of the gym. Firefighters were extinguishing flare-ups on the roof as workers continued to lay down the tar.
Some faculty were still at the school during the incident.
Staff first noticed the gym was filled with smoke and discovered the fire.
