Police seek suspects in Kannapolis murder

KANNAPOLIS ó Police are looking for two men involved in a shooting death late Monday night near Venus Street.
Authorities received reports of gunshots being fired just before 11 p.m. in the area of 1001 Venus St., a Kannapolis Police Department statement said.
Officers found Donyell Devein Simmons, 22, lying on Venus Street with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Simmons had been staying at 1001 Venus St. with a relative. The home had been forcibly entered, police said.
Witnesses reported seeing two suspects fleeing the scene in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, Kannapolis Police Sgt. Chris Nesbitt said Tuesday morning.
