Police: Helicopter crashes in southern NC

MONROE (AP) ó Authorities are on the scene of a helicopter crash in southern North Carolina.
Monroe police information clerk Mike Thomas said Thursday that crews were responding to a helicopter crash in a field on the western side of town. He said he didnít have any additional information.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said she didnít have any information about the crash she could release.
Monroe resident Katrina Sturgis said she heard a loud explosion that jarred her home shortly before 11 a.m. The 80-year-old said she went outside and saw a large cloud of smoke coming from the field across the street from her home. She said her husband called 911.
Monroe is about 20 miles southeast of Charlotte.
