Staff report
Salisbury Police broke up an after-school fight near Salisbury High School Tuesday afternoon, arresting at least five students.
Deputy Police Chief Steve Whitley said the fight involved around 50 students in an area near Caldwell Street.
“We’re not sure what started it. … They were mad for whatever reason. … It migrated off campus,” Whitley said.
He said police units are sent to the school area each afternoon to discourage such behavior. That typically works, but Tuesday afternoon, the increased police presence didn’t work.
When police intervened, several of the students fled while others remained and continued fighting. Police called in additional units, bringing the situation under control.
Whitley said some of those involved who are younger than 16 may face juvenile petitions.
Police were considering various charges, including inciting to riot. Late Tuesday, it was not clear what the charges would be.
No one was injured.
