A farmer with oxen at the end of the work day, a women’s basketball team in bloomers, a baby picture of former Secretary of State Thad Eure, and a tobacco festival queen bedecked in a gown of dried tobacco leaves, are among the treasured photographs from the North Carolina State Archives traveling with the Telling Our Stories Photography Exhibit coming to Rowan Public Library.
The exhibit presents some of the many ways the state’s stories can be told, showcasing the marvelous times, people and places of North Carolina, and is organized by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.
The exhibit will be at Rowan Public Library beginning Thursday and running through Nov. 12 at the headquarters location at 201 W. Fisher St.
The photographs themselves explore the whole gambit of themes รณ landscapes and wildlife, presidents and farmers, spirituality and conflict, landmarks and the human condition.
The display includes top winning photographs from the Our State magazine readers’ photography contest, pictures from professional photographers selected by a panel and images from the State Archives.
The pictures from the N.C. Archives range from daguerreotypes of the 1860s to color photography of the 1990s and are selected from the collection of more than 3 million images.
The N.C. State Archives collects, preserves and makes available to the public historical materials relating to North Carolina.
