SPENCER ó Police have charged a North Rowan High School teacher with having sex with a student.
Bobby Eric Sharpe, 32, of 1022 Fourth Creek Landing Drive, Statesville, is charged with 28 counts of sexual activity with a student and 12 counts of statutory sexual offense.
He was being held in the Rowan County Detention Center under $200,000 bond Tuesday night.
The female student was 15 years old when the crimes started and has since turned 16, police said.
According to a press release, the Spencer Police Department was notified June 3 of a North Rowan teacher’s possible inappropriate conduct with a student at the school. Officer Tony Hinson, the school resource officer was assigned to the case.
Police say the investigation revealed Sharpe had been having sexual relations with a female student for several months. After the case was reviewed by the Rowan County District Attorney’s office, warrants were drawn up for Sharpe on Monday. Sharpe turned himself in Tuesday.
A search warrant was also served at Sharpe’s home with the assistance of the State Bureau of Investigation to seize any evidence related to the alleged crimes. Investigators seized two home computers and greeting cards, police said.
Sharpe resigned his position at North Rowan High School the day the allegations were made.
