A V-Day benefit reading of Eve Ensler’s “Any One of Us: Words from Prison” will be presented as a fundraiser for The Family Crisis Council of Rowan County.
The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St.
As well as raising money, the goal is to raise awareness to stop violence against women and girls and funds for our beneficiaries.
“Any One Of Us: Words From Prison” is a collection of monologues written by more than 50 incarcerated or formerly incarcerated women in the United States and commissioned by V-Day. The piece reveals the connection between women in prison and the violence that often brings them there.
“Any One of Us” premiered at V-Day’s two-week festival of theater, art and spoken word entitled “Until the Violence Stops:NYC” which took place in June 2006. The play was later performed in Miami, Fla. and at “Until the Violence Stops” festivals in Ohio, Kentucky, and Rhode Island.
V-Day Salisbury will join thousands of V-Day organizers throughout the world in 2009 in premiering “Any One Of Us: Words From Prison” as a 2009 V-Day Campaign event.
V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of playwright/founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play “The Vagina Monologues,” as well as V-Day’s “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer,” and screenings of V-Day’s documentary “Until The Violence Stops.”
To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $60 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 6,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic Of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq.
V-Day was named one of Worth magazine’s “100 Best Charities” in 2001 and Marie Claire’s “Top 10 Charities” in 2006. For more information, visit www.vday.org.
Admission to Tuesday’s performance is $20. Tickets are available at the law office of Nancy R. Gaines, 121 W. Council St., Suite 102, or at the LGAC store, 405 N. Lee St.
