Members of the Rowan County Fire and Rescue Association Honor Guard will be attending weekend activities related to the 28th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service Sunday in Emmitsburg, Md.
The national service will remember 103 firefighters from 36 states, including Salisbury’s Vic Isler Sr. and Justin Monroe, who died in the line of duty in 2008.
Tamara Earnhardt, Ryan Parker and Jeff Wright will be among the Honor Guard members attending from Rowan County.
The Honor Guard is made up of firefighters, paramedics and rescue personnel from across Rowan County.
Members come from the Rowan County EMS and the Locke, Bostian Heights, Union, South Salisbury, West Rowan, Gold Hill, Rockwell Rural, Salisbury and Kannapolis fire departments.
Honor Guard Commander Ronnie Fulcher of the Rowan County Fire and Rescue Association said the honor guard has participated in the national memorial service in years past.
The memorial service will be broadcast Sunday over the Internet. More information on the service and its availability can be found on the Web site www.firehero.org.
In honor of Isler and Monroe, a large delegation from Rowan County will be traveling to Emmitsburg, home of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the National Fire Academy campus. About 35 Salisbury firefighters will be among the attendees, as will members of the Isler and Monroe families.
Isler, 40, and Monroe, 19, died from smoke and heat exposure after becoming trapped in the Salisbury Millwork Co. fire March 7, 2008.
