ROCKWELL ó Firefighters in the Rockwell City Fire Department and Rockwell Rural Fire Department will be at the intersection of N.C. 52 and N.C. 152, Sept. 4 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to raise funds through the Fill-the-Boot Campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
The Rockwell Fire Department has a four-year history of supporting MDA through Fill-the-Boot. Last year the firefighters in Rockwell collected almost $3,500. Firefighters across the nation raised more than $26 million for MDA, making the grand total for the 55-year tradition approximately $167,000,000.
Firefighters have been volunteering their time ó and boots ó since 1954 to help children and adults with muscle-deteriorating diseases.
Proceeds raised during the streetside campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including transportation services, support groups and local clinics.
Firefighter representatives will present the proceeds from their collection on Labor Day during the Annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, Sept. 6 and 7.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.
