MOORESVILLE ó Sills Creek AME Zion church will host their annual Women’s Day retreat May 16-17. The theme is “Women Working for God in the Spirit of Renewal.”
Saturday’s activities include The Legends Ball at 4 p.m. This event will honor women of the church who have paved the way for future generations. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
Sunday morning Melissa Morrison-Howard will bring the 10 a.m. message. Morrison-Howard is a graduate of A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, and Appalachian State University. She is best known for her two Olympic bronze medals in the 100m hurdles in 2000 and 2004.
Her other career highlights include bronze medalist World Indoor Championships for 60m hurdles, and she is a four-time USA Indoor Champion in the 60m hurdles.
She lives with her family in Columbia, S.C.

First Presbyterian
KANNAPOLIS ó The First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis will present the film “Fireproof” this Sunday at 4 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
All married couples and those in committed relationships are encouraged to come view this free film, starring Kirk Cameron, about a firefighter and a marriage important enough to save.

Landis First Assembly
LANDIS ó Landis First Assembly of God will present Paul and Cindy Talley this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Paul Talley grew up performing with his family in 83 countries as well as all 50 states. He began recording with Word Records at the age of 11.
For many years, he “ran from the Lord” and played in a variety of rock and roll and country bands.
Now he has been a pastor for 16 years. He and Cindy travel full-time in musical evangelism.
Organ Lutheran
This Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the youth of Organ Lutheran Church will lead an old-fashioned church service in the Old Church. Wear 1700-1800s period or regular clothing.

NEEDMORE ó Charles White, an evangelist from the Dasher church of Christ in Dasher, Ga., will be the guest speaker for a series of gospel lessons at Corinth Church of Christ, 3570 Needmore Road, located at the intersection of Mount Vernon Road.
The services are slated for Sunday through Wednesday, May 17-20. There will be three lessons on Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. with a fellowship meal between the morning and afternoon services. The remaining lessons will be on Monday through Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.
For the past 13 years, White has been actively involved with the Georgia Missions. He previously was involved with missions in Central America, including the organizing of orphanages and schools of preaching.

Bethel Lutheran
The county-wide Ascension Service, which is sponsored by L.A.M.P (Lutheran Area Musicians and Pastors), will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Road, on Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Ascension Day comes 40 days after Easter when the Risen Christ parted from His disciples and returned to the Father.
The Reverend Carrie Bishop, Calvary Lutheran Church, Spencer, will be the designated preacher for the service.
The service is not only for Lutherans, it is open to the public.
Lifeway Church

New Beginning
The Gospel Traveliers of the Carolinas will be celebrating their 27th singing anniversary on May 23 at 7 p.m. and May 24 at 3 p.m.

‘Tour de Revs’
“Tour de Revs,” three West Virginia-area Lutheran pastors riding a three-seater bamboo bicycle across the country, will be in Salisbury May 21-22. The ride will raise awareness of world hunger and wellness issues.
They will have a “show-and-tell” of the bike at the NC Lutheran Synod Office, 1988 Lutheran Synod Drive, Thursday, May 21, around 7 p.m.
At 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, there will be a breakfast and presentation at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, with a send-off at 10 a.m.

Southern City
EAST SPENCER ó Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church will present Mark Pilson in a solo piano concert tonight at 6 p.m.
Pilson is a native of Ararat, Va. He received his B.A. from Wake Forest University in music and his M.M. from the University of Miami, Fla. in piano performance.
Pilson presently teaches for the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County Schools as a music technology teacher at Diggs Elementary Magnet School for Visual and Performing Arts. Pilson also serves as the minister of music for the church. He resides in Winston-Salem with his wife and three children.
The concert will include traditional hymns, traditional gospel music and contemporary gospel music. The performance is open to the public.

Sandy Ridge
LANDIS ó Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church will celebrate its 143rd church anniversary this Sunday.
This year’s theme is “Celebrating a Living Legacy.” A component will be memorial tributes to two recently deceased members, Dr. Fred Ponder and Narvie L. Wilson.
The pastor, the Rev. Anthony J. Freeman, will be the speaker for the 11 a.m. service. The Sandy Ridge Gospel Choir will provide music.
The afternoon service begins at 3:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. George C. Banks, a previous Sandy Ridge preacher. He is currently pastor of Steele Creek AME Zion Church of Salisbury.
The annual Hall of Fame induction will include Marvin Sheely. This honor is bestowed upon members when they reach their 70th birthday.

The theme of the concert will be “Living a Blessed Life.” Eternity is a popular group from Morganton. They have recently released a new CD.

Salem Lutheran
Salem Lutheran Church on Sherrills Ford Road will celebrate this Sunday as Church Music Sunday.
The special service at 10:45 a.m. will include all the various musical groups and styles of music that are used in the congregation. There will be no 8:30 a.m. service this week.
Sunday’s worship service will include instrumental music on handbells, chimes, guitars, drums, keyboard, piano, mountain dulcimer, and pipe organ.
Choral music will be provided by the Chancel Choir, the Salem Spirit Singers, and the Men’s Chorus.
The congregation will be invited to join the singing of hymns and other songs, and the sermon will feature stories behind some of the best loved hymns.
Next Sunday the regular schedule will resume with services at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.
Scholarship Day
This Sunday is Scholarship Day at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church.

UMC courses
MISENHEIMER ó This month, Pfeiffer University will offer two separate credit/licensing course opportunities for pastors and deacons within the United Methodist Church (UMC), including offerings in Spanish and insight into the role of missions in the church.
From Monday through Friday, May 25-29, in conjunction with Wesley Theological Seminary and the Center for Deacon Studies, Pfeiffer will offer a two-credit master’s level course on the Misenheimer campus titled “The Church and its Mission” taught by Dr. Philip Wingeier-Rayo, associate professor of religion at Pfeiffer. The course will discuss the role of the church in mission in the 21st Century as well as provide a reflection on God’s Mission in the world with special attention to the relationship between gospel and culture. Participants will also visit some local mission projects.
The daylong courses will begin at 9:30 a.m., except on Memorial Day, class will begin at 1 p.m. on the Misenheimer campus. Cost is $900 and campus lodging will be available.

In addition, a licensing school for local pastors, offered in Spanish, will be held on the Misenheimer campus. With a recent grant from the Board of Ordained Ministries of the Western North Carolina Conference of the UMC and Pfeiffer’s Hispanic Leadership Academy, the school is for lay leaders who have felt the call to parish ministry and want to acquire the training required by the UMC Book of Discipline.
The school will be offered in two sections from Thursday through Monday, May 28-31, and Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 5-9 at Pfeiffer.
The contents of the course are preaching, pastoral care, church administration, and United Methodist history, doctrine and polity. The instructors will be the Rev. Dr. Aida Fernandez, who recently served as district superintendent in the New England Conference and was a candidate for the episcopacy in the Northeast Jurisdiction, and the Rev. Jorge Mayorga, who serves as district superintendent in the Wisconsin Conference and was a candidate for the episcopacy in the North Central Jurisdiction.
