Employee charged with stealing drugs from pharmacy

A Linwood woman is scheduled for a first-appearance hearing in Rowan County District Court today on charges of embezzling and trafficking in drugs stolen from Rite Aid Pharmacy No. 11462 while employed as a pharmacy technician there.
Shelley Nicole Burgess, 25, of 121-B Howard Brown Road was placed under $250,000 unsecured bond after being charged Tuesday with three counts of embezzling a controlled substance and two counts of trafficking, according to arrest reports.
The offenses are alleged to have occurred between Aug. 1 and Nov. 5 of 2007.
Burgess is charged with embezzling five dosage units of Alprazolam (also known under the trade name Xanax), eight dosage units of hydrocodone and 50 dosage units of hydrocodone, the reports say. She was also charged with two counts of trafficking hydrocodone, an opium derivative.
