Five Rowan-Salisbury School System students are attending the 2009 session of the Governor’s School of North Carolina.
The session began on June 14 and will run through July 25. These students and the area of their concentration are as follows:
Governor’s School East: Katherine V. Ritchie, West Rowan High School, art; Lauren Haas, East Rowan High School, dance; Jesse M. Myers, West Rowan High School, mathematics.
Governor’s School West: Desere Cross, West Rowan High School, English; William Yip, Salisbury High School, Spanish.
Governor’s School is held at two locations; Governor’s School East is on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh and Governor’s School West is located on the campus of Salem College in Winston-Salem. Four hundred students are chosen to attend Governor’s School at each of the two locations.
Governor’s School is a six-week summer residential program for intellectually gifted high school rising seniors; however, exceptions are made for rising juniors in selected performing and visual arts areas. The curriculum focuses on exploring ideas and concepts in each of the disciplines offered, but no credits, tests or grades are involved. The program is entirely free of charge and funded by the General Assembly of North Carolina.
The Public Schools of North Carolina, the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction through the Exceptional Children Division administer the program.
A Board of Governors, appointed by the State Board of Education, acts as an advisory body.
