Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society recently inducted 37 new members.
The new members helped the Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter earned the PTK Pinnacle Award for the second time in three years. The Pinnacle Award honors PTK chapters for enhancing their recruitment and orientation strategies, as measured by the number of new members reported in a given year.
The award promotes increased awareness of Phi Theta Kappa, and is designed to ensure the benefits of PTK membership are fully understood by all eligible students by increasing the number of members inducted by at least 10 percent over the previous year.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 states and U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, United Arab Emirates and Palau.
Students must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for membership. Students also must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in a two-year college, with a 3.0 GPA. PTK offers more than $36 million in scholarships each year

Motorcycle rider courses
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC) will offer basic motorcycle rider courses in July and August. The courses are co-sponsored by the N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program and RideNow Powersports in Concord.
RCCC is offering weekend and weekday basic rider classes. The course fee is $140. Weekday classes will meet 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 29 and 30. The weekend classes will meet 6 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
The weekend basic rider class schedule includes: July 10-12; July 17-19; July 31-Aug. 2; Aug. 7-9; Aug. 14-16; Aug. 21-23; and Aug. 28-30.
Participants must provide their own motorcycle, DOT approved helmet, eye protection and appropriate clothing. Course objectives include helping inexperienced riders develop the mental and physical skills needed for safe motorcycling and an awareness of the risks involved in riding.
All classes will meet at RideNow Powersports, 254 Concord Parkway S. (intersection of U.S. 29 and N.C. 601); however, students must register through RCCC’s Continuing Education Department.
