PFLAG scholarships
Salisbury/ Rowan Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will offer three $1,000 scholarships for area gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and/ or their straight allies for academic year 2009-2010.
PFLAG is a family-based organization committed to the civil and social rights of GLBT persons. The local Salisbury/ Rowan PFLAG chapter was the first organization in the state to award scholarships specifically to GLBT persons and their straight allies.
“We will once again be selecting a winner of the Anne Stanback-Charlotte Kinlock Scholarship, named for Salisbury native Anne Stanback and her partner, Charlotte Kinlock, and the Founder’s Equality Scholarship, named in honor of Michael Clawson, founder of the Salisbury/ Rowan chapter,” said Todd Adrian, chapter president.
“This year, we are very proud to be adding a third scholarship, the Linda Ketner Community Service Scholarship, named after Salisbury native Linda Ketner.”
“Our scholarships are unique in that you do not have to be attending a four-year traditional college to apply. We encourage anyone planning to attend a community college or trade school, including cosmetology or culinary school for example, to apply for one of our scholarships as well,” said Margaret Basinger, chairwoman of the Scholarships Advisory Committee.
Scholarship applications are available at all seven local high school guidance offices or download from the Web site, www.salisbury-pflag.org. The deadline to submit application is March 4; all candidates will be notified of the outcome by April 14,.
