Pfeiffer University will host an educational forum titled “Cultural and Language Challenges of Diverse Patient Populations” from 4-6 p.m. today. The public event will be held on the university’s Charlotte campus, at 4701 Park Road.
Co-sponsored by the regional chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Greater Charlotte Healthcare Executives Group, the purpose of this panel discussion and presentation is to provide students, administrators, doctors, nurses, community leaders and others interested in healthcare the opportunity to meet local healthcare executives and learn from their insights and experiences. One Category I credit will be given for attendance.
“Language and cultural components are particularly important in the doctor-patient relationships,” explained Dr. Carol Vogt, associate professor of health administration at Pfeiffer and one of the event organizers.
The majority of this presentation will be conducted in a panel to provide the latest information on cultural and language challenges that result in a growing diverse population. Discussion will also include identifying the cultural barriers to effective communication, the costs and benefits associated with implementing effective communication and suggested guidelines for language and cultural training programs.
Moderated by Isis Hanna, director of Continuing Medical Education at the Area Health Education Center in Charlotte, the panel will include Domonique Brown, multicultural health coordinator for the Mecklenburg County Health Department; Marilyn Gilliam, vice president of human resources for Novant Health; and Danilo Formolo, manager of language services for Carolinas Medical Center.
