Mya Davis-Young, a third-grader, won the spelling bee held at Koontz Elementary School recently.
The event took place in accordance with the Spelling Bee rules from the Scripps National Spelling Bee guidelines.
Mya spelled many difficult words to become the 2009 spelling bee champion for Koontz. A moment of awe occurred for the crowd of students, teachers and parents when the moderator announced Mya’s word as “chinchilla.” Mya calmly walked up to the microphone and began c-h-i-n-c-h-i-l-l-a without hesitation. Mya did not participate in the countywide spelling bee, which is for students in higher grades.
