Carson High band brings home trophies
The Jesse C. Carson Marching Cougars, led by band director Jeff Street, attended the North Rowan Cavalier Classic Band Competition on Saturday.
The Cougars brought home three first-place trophies in their second competition of the year.
Drum majors Joshua Burr and Robby Gianfrancesco were again awarded the first- place trophy in their class. The Carson band also received a first-place percussion trophy for their drumline and sideline performances, as well as a first place in general effects.
This year’s show includes four soloists who bring the crowd to their feet: Perrell Brown, Erin Young, Meredith Allen and Evan Rittenhouse.
The Cougars will travel to Fred T. Foard in Newton on Saturday to perform in their last competition of the year.
East rifle team
On Oct. 17, the East Rowan JROTC rifle team hosted their home meet, and the A-team took first place overall.
The meet was dedicated to Lance Corporal Nathan Elrod. Twenty teams from multiple counties participated. This was East’s second rifle match of the year.
East’s B-team took second, and South Rowan’s A-team placed third.
Individual trophies were awarded for the top three scores in each position and top three scores overall.
The Top Prone trophy was awarded to Alex Owens of East, and Top Kneeling and Standing were both awarded to Franklin Wright of East. Third place overall shooter was Derrick Thompson of East, second place shooter was Alex Owens from East and first overall shooter was Franklin Wright.
East’s A-team members are Commander Franklin Wright, Jesse Jeffery, Derrick Thompson and Thor Wright. B-team members are Joseph Scrip, Alex Owens, Samuel Lakey and Billy Sutherland.
C-team members are Miranda Harding, Amy Carlton, Brian Lentz, David Hardwood and Brandon Gardner. The rifle team is coached by 1st Sgt. Richard Sisk and Gary Wood.
