Education: Academy of Science and Math summer program

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Salisbury High School, for the second consecutive year, is hosting a summer session of the Academy of Science and Math.
The program, which takes place during July, is for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students residing in Rowan County who: 1) enjoy the challenges presented by advanced study and hands-on experiences in science and math and 2) earn a final grade of “B” or higher in both science and math by the end of the 2008-2009 school year.
Parents and students who desire to learn more about the Academy of Science and Math and the summer component of the program are invited to an information/question-and-answer session at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Salisbury High School on either Tuesday, March 10 or Thursday, March 12. Applications for enrollment will be available at each session.
Students attend the program from 8:15 a.m.ń12:30 p.m. in the main classroom building of Salisbury High School. To complete the program, students attend two (2) of the four (4) weeks in July; however, students that can only attend a one-week session are also welcome.
Transportation to and from the program is the responsibility of parents/guardian. Attendance last summer is not a prerequisite for continuation this summer by rising 8th and 9th grade students.
Teachers in the Academy summer program present grade-appropriate subject matter that changes year to year in degree of difficulty and intensity of instruction. Subject material for the summer includes environmental science, physical science, and biology; geometry and statistics; data analysis, and data presentation.
After attending the Academy’s summer program, students entering grade 9 who wish to continue in the Academy may enroll at Salisbury High School after a request for an emergency transfer into the Academy is granted.
Last summer 103 students attended the first summer component of the Academy. Students came from all public middle schools in Rowan County and from private schools both within and outside of the county.
