It’s prom season and high school seniors will soon graduate.
And for those celebrations, some teens may pay the ultimate price ó death.
The Rowan-Kannapolis Alcohol Beverage Control Board and The Century Council have partnered to present an awareness program about drunken driving and underage drinking in the hopes of preventing life-altering events.
Brandon Silveria and his father, Tony, will speak to students at area schools about the consequences of making the wrong decision.
Brandon is the victim of a drunken driver ó himself.
Silveria was 17 when he crashed his car after attending a party where he drank alcohol.
He was in a three-month long coma and spent several years in rehabilitation. The wreck left him with permanent physical and speech disabilities.
Brandon, now in his late 30s, travels with his father across the country warning groups about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Father and son are spokesmen for The Century Council, which is funded by America’s leading distillers.
The two will speak today at Carson High School at 9:30 a.m. and at North Rowan High at 12:30 p.m.
On Friday the duo will speak at A.L. Brown High School at 9:30 a.m. and at West Rowan Middle School at 12:30 p.m.
The programs are open to the public.
The Century Council was founded in 1991 and is an independent, national not-for-profit organization. It is based in Virginia.
