County commits to new central school offices

During their retreat this morning, the Rowan County Board of Commissioners committed to a new central school administrative office.
They will give $350,000 a year, which school system will match, over 15-year loan period. The cost for the office is expected to be $7.5 million.
The school system prefers a new building, possibly downtown, or refitting an existing building. The Rowan-Salisbury Schools Board of Education will make the final decision on which option to pursue.
The county has no new money available; the first payments likely will come out of the county’s fund balance.
The commission still has to vote on the issue, but told school officials attending the retreat that they were committed.
