Rowan County won’t replace its No. 2 manager.
Monday night, the Rowan County Board of Commissioners met in closed session for about 30 minutes before announcing that it will eliminate the job of director of administration.
Current Director of Administration Ken Deal announced earlier this month that he is stepping down after 23 years in Rowan County government.
Deal, 57, became Rowan County’s first-ever personnel director in 1986. As the job evolved, he became director of administration, serving as assistant county manager but without the title. His duties eventually included human resources, building maintenance, workers compensation, pre-trial release, the Rowan County Airport and Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Deal’s major duties of late have been overseeing renovation and expansion of county buildings.
County Manager Gary Page said at the time of the announcement that he thought under the economic circumstances, there was a “good chance” that the county would freeze the position.
Deal makes $102,000 per year.
