The Independent-Tribune newspaper of Concord and Kannapolis is cutting back from daily publication to three days a week on April 22, Publisher Terry Coomes announced.
The paper will be published Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and feature “hyper-local” news.
In a story on the Independent Tribune’s front page Thursday, Coomes characterized the change as a response to a research study.
“This new hyper-local model will allow the Independent Tribune to deliver news that readers and non-readers have told us is most important to them, and that they cannot find anywhere else,” Coomes said.
Breaking news will be reported on the newspaper’s Web site.
Several newspapers around the country have reduced editions in response to shrinking advertising revenues, and the Christian Science Monitor announced last fall that in April it will become an online-only publication.
The Independent Tribune is owned by Media General Newspapers, which publishes 24 daily newspapers, including The Tampa Tribune, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal
