CLEVELAND ó A wood grinder that chews old pallets into sawdust caught fire Saturday night at a pallet-making plant at 12010 Statesville Blvd.
The Cleveland Community Fire Department and several mutual aid departments responded at 7:30 p.m. to the fire, which destroyed the $30,000 wood chipper.
There was no damage to the plant itself.
“I can’t tell you what caused it,” said Ron Herion, safety officer for the Cleveland department.
The biggest difficulty for firefighters was extending their hose lines to the back of the building where the grinder was located. Once water was on the fire, it was quickly contained, Herion said.
The pallet-making plant lies west of Freightliner near the town limits.
