Salisbury City Council is expected to award a $67,087 contract Tuesday for installation of a new Miller Street sidewalk from North Main to Jackson streets.
The sidewalk is connected to the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund’s Fit Community Grant, which was awarded to the city last year.
It is seen as the first phase of physical improvements in the North Main Street area to encourage healthier lifestyles.
The construction will reduce the width of West Miller Street from 34 to 26 feet with the addition of a 5-foot-wide sidewalk and a 3-foot planting strip.
The project will require the removal of some asphalt and curb, according to City Engineer Craig Powers. The city reports that it received 10 bids on the project with Carolina Siteworks having the lowest bid.
Council meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
In other agenda items, council will:
– Hold a public hearing and consider the voluntary annexation of North Hills Christian School, whose property at 2970 W. Innes St. includes 17.1 acres. The annexation would take effect Dec. 31.
– Hold a public hearing and consider a special use permit for the Looking Glass Artist Collective, which is seeking the permit so wine and beer can be served at some of its events.
– Hold a public hearing and consider an amendment to the Land Development Ordinance map to allow for construction of 48 more apartment units at Westridge Village behind Salisbury Mall.
– Hold a public hearing and consider an LDO map amendment to allow for construction of a new Taco Bell near the corner of N.C. 150 and Jake Alexander Boulevard.
– Consider acceptance of the street serving the new Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School as a public street.
– Consider awarding a $87,207 contract to Dell Computer for the purchase of city computers.
– Hear a report on the “Read to Your Child Days” event last week at Rowan Public Library.
– Consider closing numerous streets from 5-11 p.m. Aug. 6 for the Crossroads Classic Bike Race.
– Hear what the city’s street resurfacing schedule is.
