The Holy Bible says Jesus fed 5,000 people with a few fish and loaves of bread. He never once charged a fee.
A local church is taking that concept to heart.
Remnant in Christ Outreach Worship Center, at 627 Newsome Road, is hosting a free lunch for the community Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That’s right. Free.
“I just want people who are hungry to be fed. I’m just happy to be doing what God has commissioned us to do as children of God,” Pastor Miriam Parker Keller said Thursday.
Keller said the church welcomes anybody who wants to come and eat.
It has always been part of her vision, she said, to clothe the naked and feed the hungry.
This is one big step toward that vision.
“I am excited. It’s a vision and I’m just watching the vision unfold,” she said.
Keller said she is looking forward to rolling up her sleeves and serving Saturday.
“People are hungry and in need,” Minister J. Bush said.
The congregation has already placed flyers at various sites around Salisbury, including Rowan Helping Ministries, the Department of Social Services and area businesses.
One of the members who works at Livingstone College said people couldn’t understand why a church would feed people for free.
“I told her to tell them, ‘Jesus did it and that’s what we are supposed to do, follow in his footsteps,’ ” Bush said.
The morning of the event, an evangelism team from the church will go out to talk about Christ with people and invite more people to attend the lunch.
This isn’t the first time Remnant in Christ has offered the community a free meal. The ministry did it about two years ago.
The first time, the church completely funded the event. This time, members had help from individuals and businesses.
Companies from Concord, Mocksville, Winston-Salem, Kannapolis, Salisbury and Spencer provided gift cards, drinks, desserts and other supplies.
The church members also provided food for the lunch.
“People have been really kind,” Bush said. “We just appreciate the outpour and support from the community. We all are a part of this community.”
