Cabarrus-Rowan MPO proposes projects for federal stimulus money

The Cabarrus-Rowan Metropolitan Planning Organization has submitted a list of nine proposed stimulus package projects to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The projects, which carry a total estimated cost of $1,775,000, are in addition to “shovel-ready” economic stimulus projects the DOT had identified previously for every highway division.
The submitted MPO projects include one in Granite Quarry, five in Rockwell and three in Salisbury.
The list of projects and their estimated costs:
– Granite Quarry, East Bank Street from Brown to Cleo streets, $475,000.
– Rockwell, Main Street sidewalk, $40,000.
– Rockwell, Main Street, handicap-accessible curb at intersections, $25,000.
– Rockwell, Cannon Street sidewalk, $80,000.
– Rockwell, Market Street resurfacing, $180,000.
– Rockwell, Loop Broad Street sidewalks, $35,000.
– Salisbury, Grants Creek greenway, $350,000.
– Salisbury, Bank Street bridge repairs, $450,000.
– Salisbury, Fisher Street bridge repairs.
Statewide, the DOT had identified $5.17 billion in highway/bridge improvements and $1.035 billion in other transportation projects which it considered ready to be under contract in 180 days or meet a cash payout in 24 months.
Projects identified for Rowan County included a $450,000 bridge replacement on Shue Road and a $400,00 bridge replacement on McCanless Road, a $6.5 million grade separation in Salisbury to eliminate the Klumac Road rail crossing, $240,000 to expand bus service in Salisbury, $108,000 to subsidize bus fares and $722,000 for two 35-foot Salisbury Transit buses.
