Adam Haynes: 'You've got to shoot high'

On July 4, 2007, Adam Haynes was celebrating with friends in a boat on Lake Norman. When the boat threatened to run adrift on a sandbar, Adam shouted, “I’ll get it,” and dived in.
When he was pulled out of the water moments later, Adam was paralyzed. After he got a severe lung infection from breathing in bacteria-filled water, doctors weren’t even sure he was going to make it.
He survived, and two years later, he’s living in Salisbury, working at a job, and challenging himself physically in the hope of eventually walking again. If that doesn’t happen, he says he wants to at least be able to live independently.
“You’ve got to shoot high,” he says. “You wake up and try to make that day the best it can be.”
