Fifty-three rising sixth- and seventh-grade girls have been selected to participate in the Catawba Conservation Camp (C3), a weeklong residential science camp to be held July 5-10 on the Catawba College campus.
The 53 students were selected from 280 applications received from girls enrolled in 40 different schools in Rowan, Stanly and Iredell counties.
A pool of 50 alternate students remains, in the event one of the selected campers chooses not to register for the camp.A required camper/parent meeting will be held Monday, April 20, in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ketner Hall on the Catawba campus. Registration for the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m., with a general information session to begin at 7 p.m.
Campers and parents will meet instructors and counselors, complete registration forms, and pay a $25 non-refundable registration fee (cash or check only). Failure of the camper and her parent or legal guardian to attend this meeting will be considered a forfeiture of the camper’s slot and an alternate will be chosen to replace her.

C3 director is Dr. Cyndi Osterhus, director of Catawba’s Academy for Teaching. A team of public school teachers and Catawba faculty led by Dr. Joe Poston, chair of biology at Catawba College, will instruct the students.
Funded through a grant from Burroughs Wellcome Fund, C3 is an effort to interest girls in the environmental sciences. The grant allows funding for all costs, except for a student’s $25 non-refundable registration fee and transportation to and from the college. Financial assistance is available.
