Rowan Helping Ministries West has announced the second annual Santa’s Run/Walk for Hunger 5K on Dec. 5.
Proceeds from the event will benefit basic needs in the West Rowan area. Participants can register for $17 through Wednesday, and then $22 thereafter. Race day fees can be reduced to $20 with the donation of five canned goods. The entry fee will include a dri-fit long-sleeve shirt. There will also be a half-mile fun run for ages 12 and under. The registration fee for the fun run is $5 or five canned goods, and will include a medal for each finisher.
Race day registration will start at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will start at 9 a.m., and the fun run will follow at approximately 9:45 a.m.
Refreshments will be available at the conclusion of each event. Awards will be presented in 14 age-group categories for both male and female.
Race headquarters will be at the Millbridge Ruritan Building on Sloan Road, just across from Sloan Park. Sloan Road is located approximately 10 miles south of Salisbury on N.C. 150. The Millbridge Ruritans are a major sponsor along with the Salisbury Rowan Runners. Other sponsors are Gays Chapel United Methodist Men’s Club, Masonry Restoration Inc., Bank of the Carolinas, Sportrax, Locke Fire Department and Vac and Dash in Albemarle.
“We need to do all we can to help those who are in crisis in the Western Rowan area,” Josh Houghton of Rowan Helping Ministries said. “We had a good turnout last year, and hope for more on Dec. 5. Rowan Helping Ministries will also benefit from the Winter Flight 8K in Salisbury on January 30th. These events reach out to a portion of our community who can have a very positive impact at a critical time of the year. Santa has even promised to be on hand if his busy schedule allows.”
The race course will start on Sloan Road and turn right to follow the length of Kerr Road, and turn right again on Lyerly Road. The runners will then turn around and retrace their steps back to the Millbridge Ruritan building.
