Prep football: A.L. Brown-NW Cabarrus preview
Published 12:00 am Friday, October 30, 2009
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: A.L. Brown 8-1, 5-0 SPC; NW Cabarrus 7-2, 4-1 SPC
Series: Wonders lead 33-3-1
Last meeting: Wonders won 13-6 in 2004 when the schools were NPC rivals. After a four-year hiatus in the series, the neighbors are back in the same league. Expect major emotion on both sides.
Streak: A long one. The Wonders have won the last 28 meetings.
Last time the Trojans beat the Wonders: Northwest won 18-0 in 1976 behind Larry Rucker, probably the best player in school history.
History: The Nick Maddox-led Wonders stomped a pretty fair NWC team 97-0. Some Trojan supporters still haven’t forgiven Brown for the chainsaw massacre that occurred on a Halloween weekend 11 years ago at Memorial Stadium.
Wonders on the road: 3-1
Last week: Wonders battered Hickory Ridge 38-13; Northwest, playing without QB Jeremy Cannon, dominated Central Cabarrus 42-0
Next week: Wonders take on Concord; Northwest is at home against new rival Cox Mill
nGame notes: Officially, the SPC is still a three-team race, but the Wonders can all but wrap up the title and clinch the league’s No. 1 seed with a victory tonight.
Northwest and Hickory Ridge have one loss apiece in the league. Northwest lost to Hickory Ridge, a team the Wonders crunched last week.Tailback Travis Riley has put up 26 TDs to key Brown’s offense. The defense, which includes lineman Gerald Holt, may have turned in its best effort of the season last week.
Cannon’s injured foot is a storyline, but he’ll likely play. He directed a home win over South Rowan, the only team that’s beaten the Wonders this season. Grant Keyes, a standout receiver/defensive back is another Trojan to watch. óó Mike London
