BOSTON ó David Jones scored a short-handed goal to lift the Colorado Avalanche over the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Monday.
Marek Svatos had a tiebreaking, power-play goal midway into the second period. Milan Hejduk and Scott Hannan also scored for the Avalanche (3-1-1).
Craig Anderson made 29 saves for Colorado.
Michael Ryder, Mark Recchi and Blake Wheeler each scored for Boston (2-3), which closed its season-opening homestand.
Kings 2, Islanders 1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. ó Jon Quick made 28 saves, and Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty scored.
Quick, who has played every minute in the Kings’ first five games of the season, was rarely tested. Los Angeles has won four straight following a season-opening, 6-3 loss to Phoenix. Quick fell 1:55 short of his fifth NHL shutout when Matt Moulson scored his second goal of the season.
New York (0-1-3) is still seeking its first win after starting the season with three overtime losses, two by shootout. Martin Biron made 20 saves and is one win away from 200 in the NHL.
John Tavares, the top pick in this year’s draft by the Islanders, failed to earn a point for the first time in his NHL career after two goals and three assists in his first three.
