Gallagher column: Getting ready for tonight

Roaming the county, getting ready for tonight …On Sunday afternoon in Bank of America Stadium, the teams on display will be the Carolina Panthers, the Washington Redskins …
And the West Rowan Falcons.
Huh?
West Rowan will be featured during halftime as it competes in the Harris Teeter Quarterback Challenge.
West will go up against Marlboro County (S.C.). Both teams were involved in the Panthers’ seven-on-seven scrimmage back in the summer. The Falcons, by the way, placed second in that competition, losing in the championship game to Independence.
Quarterback B.J. Sherrill and receiver Jon Crucitti will be on the big stage. Each team will be assigned a fan, who will also participate.
According to West coach Scott Young, each team will get three throws, one for distance, one with the receiver for longest throw and one for longest hook-up with the fan.
The winners get a Harris Teeter gift card.

The biggest crowd in the county tonight will probably be at West Rowan as the Falcons play host to Carson.
It will be a good time to give to the United Way.
The Honor Society from West is going to work with United Way volunteers to solicit contributions. Student reps and United Way adult volunteers will have a booth set up near the home and visitor gates to offer fans a chance to donate.
County athletic director Walter Hart said, “What a great gesture on the part of these schools and their athletic programs to help United Way.”

Jason Rollins just wanted the game to end.
South Rowan was up on North Iredell 49-0 at halftime, had only thrown four times and things were getting way out of hand.
“That was tough,” he said of the throwing stats, “because we’ve been working on our passing. But when you’re in that situation …
“I’ve been on the other side,” Rollins continued, referring to some routs at the hands of West. “We were trying to pull back and run the clock out.”
–
But Rollins can’t pull back when the defense is scoring. Among the Raider touchdowns was a recovery in the end zone by Cadarreus Mason after a blocked punt.
The photo in the Post showed Mason with arms raised, celebrating. Rollins shook his head when asked about defensive players going nuts after making it into the scoring column.
“They think they’ve won the Super Bowl when they score,” he said with a laugh.

Going into Week 8, Rowan County is one of the few spots that is flourishing.
No one has a winning record in the CCC. Salisbury has the best record (along with East Davidson and Central Davidson) at 3-3.
In the NPC, the first four teams in the standings (all from Rowan County) have winning records. The bottom three (all from Iredell County) have losing records.
And the SPC? Ouch.
After A.L. Brown and Northwest Cabarrus, both at 5-1, no one else has a winning record. The bottom three are all winless.
Ron Massey’s A.L. Brown Wonders take on one of those 0-fer teams tonight in Cox Mill.
–
I’m trying to figure out which is the biggest story at this very moment: East Rowan’s 6-1 record or North Rowan’s sudden emergence.
They’re both eye-opening feats, but the Cavs have opened our eyes more over the past two weeks.
When North Rowan last left its stadium, the Cavaliers were 0-4 and going nowhere fast.
They return tonight for the first time in three weeks tied for first place in the YVC at 2-0 after victories against South Stanly and East Montgomery. The Cavs will be an overwhelming favorite against North Moore.
In other games, East visits Statesville, Salisbury goes to West Davidson and Davie’s homecoming is against 6-0 Reynolds.

On the air tonight …
The Carson at West Rowan game is the biggie, and two radio stations will bring us the action.
– Hall of Famer Howard Platt and sidekick Wilson “Don’t call me Wild” Cherry calls the game for WSTP 1490-AM.
– With South Rowan off, WRNA 1140-AM is turning its attention to Carson as Carl Ford, the Commissioner of High School Football, and The Coach, Bob Parker, give the people in the southern end of the county some good listening.
– On WSAT 1280-AM, Mark, Johnny and the boys will bring us its weekly dose of updates and radio cut-ins.
Go to a game tonight, folks. And be nice.
