Game notes: West Rowan’s dominance of Rowan County (31 straight wins) is well-documented, but the Falcons’ run in the NPC may be even more impressive. West has taken on very good teams from Mooresville, Statesville, Lake Norman, Northwest Cabarrus and West Iredell over the years and generally taken care of business. Since A.L. Brown exited the NPC for the SPC, the NPC has belonged to the Falcons. West shared the 2004 crown with the Wonders and has claimed outright titles the last four seasons. Its only NPC blemish since a 14-7 loss to Brown early in 2004 was a two-point loss to West Iredell in 2007.
West Iredell coach Mark Weycker prepares his team as well as anyone for the Falcons’ physical onslaught. Besides scoring 22 and 20 in the last two matchups, the Warriors fell to the Falcons 19-12 in 2006 and 42-20 in 2005. West Iredell has a great talent in safety/receiver/returner P.J. Clyburn, whom East coach Brian Hinson calls a “Sunday player.”West will count on quarterback B.J. Sherrill, receiver Jon Crucitti and tailback K.P. Parks (8,435 career rushing yards, 118 TDs) to keep rolling. Armando Trujillo is a key blocker.
