Area sports briefs: Collins is 15th in golf tourney

Will Collins (Salisbury) finished 15th individually in the VCU Shootout held at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond with rounds of 73-72-74 ó 219.
Collins helped 19th-ranked Virginia finish second in team scoring to UNC Wilmington.
– Middle school football
West Rowan’s seventh-graders defeated Southeast 28-6 on Tuesday.
It was 28-0 at halftime.
Marquise McCain scored three long TDs, running 60 yards on the first snap from scrimmage, returning a punt 70 yards and returning an interception 45 yards.
A pass from M.J. Rayner to Alexis Archie provided the other West TD. Shakir Simmons scored a pair of two-point conversions.
Jacob Radtke, Marshall Ball, Hunter Mesimer, Dallas Whitley and Daekwon Smith stood out on offense for the Bulldogs.
McCain and Simmons made interceptions. Malik Thompson forced a fumble that was recovered by Jason Odell. Dawon Steele made five solo tackles.
* Corriher-Lipe’s seventh-graders beat Knox 6-0 in a double-overtime thriller.
A-Rod Kennerly threw a touchdown pass to Kameron Sherrill on the first play of the second overtime.
Corriher-Lipe then held the Trojans for downs. An interception by Dustin Jenkins ended the game.
Quan Rhyne also intercepted a pass for the Yellow Jackets (1-2). Grek Eury, Christian Neal and Alex Parham were beasts on defense for the Yellow Jackets.
– Prep volleyball
Carson beat NPC foe East Rowan 24-26, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 on Tuesday.
The Cougars are 6-2 in the NPC, 13-2 overall and reside in third place. They play West Rowan on Thursday.
* Second-place North Iredell swept fourth-place South Rowan, while first-place West Iredell swept West Rowan in Tuesday’s other NPC matches.
* Carson’s jayvees beat East Rowan 25-12, 25-12.
– Prep football
West Rowan is ranked ninth in the latest CarolinaPreps.com media poll for all classifications.
R.J. Reynolds is 12th. West Forsyth is 17th. Charlotte Independence edged Matthews Butler for the top spot.
– Salisbury Academy
Lucas Capito had a hat trick in the SA soccer team’s 4-2 win against Statesville Christian. Philip Simons also scored a goal for the Jaguars (6-1).
* Salisbury Academy’s jayvee volleyball team fell to Statesville Christian 2-0.
Juliana Anderson, Grace Yatawara and Emily Capito excelled for the Jaguars.
* Salisbury Academy’s varsity volleyball team was a 2-0 winner against Statesville Christian.

Tom Hadley, 73, shot a first-round 70 for the lead in the North Carolina Super Senior Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Salisbury on Tuesday.
Jon Deluise was alone in second place, three shots back. Defending champion Larry Boswell shot 4-over 75 and is tied for third. The final round is today.
– North Hills volleyball
The North Hills varsity volleyball team has won its last four games against the Cabarrus Stallions, the Hayworth Christian Knights, the Greensboro Panthers and the Forsyth Hawks.
– North Rowan boosters
The North Rowan High School Booster Club will hold its October meeting on Monday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the school library.

– East Little League
East Rowan Little League is electing new board members. Open positions are Vice President of Baseball, Safety and Security, Media, Secretary and Concessions.

– College golf
Pfeiffer’s men’s golf team finished 13th in the Flagler Invitational.
Laurence Noot led Pfeiffer with a three-round total of 232.
He tied for 30th.
– Catawba tennis
Catawba’s tennis teams breezed past Bluefield 9-0 on Monday in nonconference action.
Both Catawba teams improved to 3-0.
