From staff reportsSisters Katherine and Emily Shields (Salisbury) posted top-10 finishes at the ITU Duathlon World Championship competition held in Concord on Saturday.
The event consisted of a 5K run, 20K bike and a finishing 2.5K run. Great Britain’s Sophie Coleman won the junior women’s event in 1:04.30.
Katherine Shields was ninth in 1:13.14, while Emily was 10th in 1:14.44.
Edinburgh, Scotland, is the host for the ITU Duathlon World Championships on Sept. 3-5, 2010.
n Rusher wins tourney
Salisbury Academy’s Isabella Rusher won the girls division at the Middle School State Championship tournament held in Badin.
Rusher shot 80-80 ó 160 and won a playoff with Winston-Salem’s Victoria Allred for the championship.
Salisbury Academy’s Madeline Hoskins was 13th in the girls division at 95-102 ó 197. Grace Yatawara shot 105-102 ó 207 and finished 15th.
n Local golfer Davis Richards tied for 12th in the boys division. Richards shot rounds of 80-73 ó 153.
n Prep cross country
Paced by individual champion Ross Oden, East Rowan’s boys won the Cougar Invitational 5K held at Charlotte Vance on Saturday. East had 49 points. Forestview and Hickory Ridge tied for second with 59 apiece.
Oden’s winning time was 16:41.5. Other top runners for East were Cole Honeycutt (second, 17:10.2), Brad Oden (10th, 17:54.3), Preston Dixon (17th, 18:38), Mark Almeida (19th, 18:46.3), Hunter Arey (21st, 18:53.4) and Bryson Stoner (30th, 19:24.4).
Carson was eighth with 203 points. Nick Golden (31st, 19:24.8), Chase Johnson (19:56.5), Jacob Fink (20:08.3), Matt Hill (20:11) and Wesley Carlton (21:02.3) led Carson.
n Providence won the girls competition in the Cougar Invitational with 20 points.
Carson placed fourth with 115 points, while East was sixth with 129.
Sierra Zemanick (sixth, 21:13.6), Jordan Murdock (16th, 22:45), Devan Purvis (26th, 23:52.2), Sarah Holman (29th, 24:38.6) and Alex Hunter (38th, 25:19.9) led the Cougars.
n Top East runners were Kristen Hatley (13th, 22:34), Jenny Hughes (20th, 23:13), Cacy Honeycutt (23rd, 23:32.4), Jenna Cauble (36th, 24:59.8) and Leah Bumby (37th, 25:02.7).
n Prep tennis
North Rowan lost to Gray Stone 7-2. Diamond Jackson-Haley Ridenhour and Kayla Morgan-Catherine Crawford won in doubles for North.
n North beat Albemarle 7-2 for a YVC victory. Jackson, Kelli Berry, Morgan, Ridenhour and Caitlin Crawford won in singles for the Cavaliers (8-2 YVC). Morgan-Ridenhour and Berry-Crawford were doubles winners.
n Catawba athletics
Catawba fell to Appalachian State 3-0 in field hockey at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sunday.
Keeper Bronwen Gainsford made 18 saves for the Indians (1-7). Catawba was outshot 30-5.
n Catawba’s volleyball team lost 25-19, 27-25, 25-18 to Brevard at Goodman Gym on Saturday. Catawba (8-6, 2-3 SAC) was led by Shay Meeks’ 14 kills. Taylor Doss had five blocks.
n Catawba’s cross country teams finished fourth in eight-team fields at Saturday’s Greensboro Invitational contested at Hagan Stone Park.
Maleah Cole paced the Catawba women. She placed eighth on a 5K course in 19:57.
Christian Crifasi paced the Catawba men. He was 13th in an 8K race in 27:36. Jacob Hill (South Rowan) was 53rd in 33.33.
n Catawba’s women’s soccer team rallied past SAC foe Mars Hill 3-1 on Saturday. Catawba (6-2-1, 1-0) got goals from Alyssa Retundie, Katie Gair and Kristen Girardi. Lindsay Webster made six saves.
n Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s women’s soccer team whipped Anderson 4-0 on Friday.
Sheena Regan’s goal put Pfeiffer (3-3-3, 1-1-2 CC) ahead to stay.
n Pfeiffer’s men’s soccer team beat 11th-ranked Anderson 2-0 on Saturday. The Falcons (5-3, 3-1 CC) got a go-ahead goal from Fahret Salihov.
n Pfeiffer’s women’s volleyball team stayed hot with a sweep of Converse on Saturday. Pfeiffer improved to 9-6, 6-1 CC.
n Pfeiffer’s men’s cross country team was fifth in Saturday’s Greensboro Invitational. Matt Tyndall led the Falcons. He was ninth in 27:13 on the 8K course.
n Pfeiffer’s women’s cross country team was second in Greensboro. Lindsey Phillips was third overall in 19:34 on a 5K course.
n Sacred Heart soccer
Sacred Heart’s soccer team defeated Concordia Christian 8-1.
Yonathan Sorto scored two goals, while Banks Fisher, Bobby Cardelle, Steven Mazur, Christian Hester and Nick Greene scored one each. Hester and Cardelle were goalkeepers. Greene and Chandler Blackwell paced the defense.
n In a 3-1 victory against Salisbury Academy, Sorto, Cardelle and Max Fisher scored for the Dolphins. Greene, Reilly Gokey and keeper Banks Fisher led the defense.
n Salisbury Academy
John Latimer scored a goal for the SA soccer team in a 3-1 loss against Sacred Heart.
n Salisbury Academy’s girls tennis squad beat First Assembly 9-0 for their sixth straight win.
