Area sports briefs: Salisbury golf posts low total

Salisbury’s girls golf team competed in a match with every NPC squad and shot a 117 at Warrior on Monday.
Lily Yatawara shot an even-par 35 that included two birdies and two bogeys.
Catherine Parks (39) and Madison Kennedy (43) also scored for the Hornets. Amber Lyerly had a 44, and Brooke Smith posted a 54.
n Prep tennis
East Rowan’s girls tennis team defeated NPC rival Carson 8-1 on Monday.
Devan Corpening, Megan Bullins, Kayela Wilson, Katie Cassady and Hannah Pressley were singles winners for the second-place Mustangs. Kelly Dulkoski won at No. 1 singles for the third-place Cougars.
Brittany Honeycutt-Corpening, Wilson-Bullins and Cassady-Brett Kesler won doubles matches. East plays first-place Statesville on Wednesday.
n West Rowan won 8-1 in an NPC match against West Iredell.
Kate Ritchie, Madison Rusher, Ellen Watts, Maggie Daniel and Jacque Gregoire were singles winners for the Falcons.
Sarah Teel-Ritchie, Rusher-Watts and Daniel-Mary Tyler March won in doubles.
n Prep football
Reserved parking for Salisbury’s home football game with Davie can be purchased in the school office from 8 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. through Friday.
Parking passes, which are limited and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, are $3 each. Questions should be directed to the school office at at 704-636-1221.
n College football
Tusculum quarterback Bo Cordell, Tusculum linebacker Mike Washington and Carson-Newman punter Chris Jones were picked as the SAC Players of the Week.
Cordell, a freshman, broke is own school record with 478 passing yards.
n College basketball
Livingstone released its 2009-10 schedule on Monday. Coach James Stinson’s men and coach Angelyne Brown’s women have scheduled 27 games each. Both teams will play 12 home games at Trent Gym.
The men open against Cheyney in the I-85 Tournament that also includes Catawba and Pfeiffer. The women will travel to compete in the Lincoln Classic.
All CIAA contests will be doubleheaders played at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
n College volleyball
Livingstone’s volleyball team lost 25-7, 25-21, 25-13 to St. Augustine’s on Monday.
Livingstone (9-2, 5-2 CIAA) plays host to Concord at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
n Middle school softball
Erwin’s softball team defeated China Grove 20-2.
Josie McNeely had five hits for the Eagles. Katie Kepley and Jaysa Jordan had three each. Kaleigh Troutman had two.
McNeely pitched a two-hitter with five Ks. She was backed by strong defense.
n North Hills sports
North Hills’ boys cross country team defeated Davidson Day, Covenant Classical and Statesville Montessori at Dan Nicholas Park on Monday. Will Cody led North Hills. He was second overall at 13:49.
n North Hills’ girls finished second to Davidson Day. Natalie Whicker led North Hills with a time of 15:56 and placed fourth.
n The North Hills soccer team beat Salisbury Academy’s fifth and sixth graders 5-0 on Monday.
Zack Sukkasem had two goals for the Eagles. Logan Miller, Brandon Lottes and Allison Voncanon also scored. It was Voncanon’s first goal of the season. Sam Reeder and Jay Wood shared the shutout.
The Eagles play Clearview today at 4 p.m.n Sacred Heart sports
Sacred Heart’s soccer team posted a 3-3 tie against Hickory Christian Middle School last week.
Yonathan Sorto led the Dolphins with two goals, and Bobby Cardelle scored once. Nick Greene and Kate Sullivan led the defense with the help from Stephen Mazur and Reilly Gokey.
n GARS
Seventy-two GARS members played at Corbin Hills Golf Club on Monday. Jack Swicegood shot his age with a 78.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 62.94 was Dale Cobb. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Harry DeVlieger with a net of 59.70. Low ‘C’ Flight player was John Noonan with a net of 62.62. John Rader was the Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 62.27.
n Catawba hoops clinic
Catawba will hold a basketball skills clinic for boys and girls in grades 2-8 on Monday (a teacher workday) from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Goodman Gymnasium. The $40 cost includes lunch, and register by calling clinic director Rick Joines at 704-637-4226.
