Area sports briefs: North grad running well

From staff reportsSt. Andrews’ Tommy Wilson (North Rowan) finished 27th in the Guilford Cross Country Carnival on Saturday.
Wilson covered the 8K course in 29:31.4 and helped St. Andrews finish fourth.
Earlier this season, Wilson ran 17:32.64 on a 5K course at the Adidas Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington and placed 40th.
n UNC Asheville’s Adam Vick (Salisbury) was 33rd in the Big South Preview 8K meet at Shady Oaks in Winston-Salem on Saturday and helped the Bulldogs finish fourth.
Vick was clocked in 30:22.
n 5K road race
Catawba’s athletics department will hold a 5K road race at 9 a.m. on Sept. 26.
Pre-registration is $20 (on or before Sept. 23) and race-day registration is $25. Brochures are available at gocatawbaindians.com.

n College golf
UNC Greensboro’s Lauren Smith (Salisbury) shot rounds of 85-76 รณ 161 as the Spartans tied for third in the rain-shortened Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
n Women’s soccer
Catawba lost to Embry-Riddle 2-0 on Sunday. The Indians (4-2-1) missed numerous scoring chances in the first half.
Catawba outshot the Eagles 16-9.
n Golf tournament
The 3rd annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament will be held at Corbin Hills on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m.
The format is Captain’s Choice. The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.
Lunch is included in the entry fee. Individual and corporate sponsorships are welcomed.
