From staff reports
East Rowan and Salisbury soccer teams fought to a 2-2 tie in Granite Quarry on Tuesday.
“I’m impressed with East,” said Salisbury coach Tom Sexton, whose team won the recent county tournament. “They played a very pretty game tonight. They’re playing a different level of soccer over there now, and it’s always been tough for us to win in Granite Quarry.
East led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Jan Garus, who scored on a breakaway in the 25th minute after taking a pass from Robbie Barnes.
Salisbury got goals from Connor Miller on a penalty kick and Kenny Bonilla on a breakaway.
Garus knocked in a long bomb, according to Sexton, to give East a tie.
“We had a lot of shots, did everything right but score,” Sexton said.
Sexton said Salisbury, which lost 12 seniors, remains “a work in progress.” He praised the play of keeper Scott van der Poel, Tom Grant, Matt Cervantes, Matt Marshall, Spencer Dixon and Luke Hutton.
Dillon Avery made 10 saves for East.
East takes on Cox Mill tonight. Salisbury plays at Mount Pleasant.
