Tip is for service rendered, not gift
This letter is in response to the Aug. 18 letter from Wayne Fowler concerning “The Tip.”
Mr. Fowler, we know you never worked in a restaurant; your letter gave you away.
First, what in the world would you do if all the servers did end up in the unemployment line? Guess you would have to learn to cook.
Service and attitude:
Good service = tip.
Not good service = no tip.
Yes, tipping is your privilege. But, in all fairness, we do provide a service, and a tip is gratuity for a service rendered. Which is customarily 15 to 18 percent of the total bill before tax.
Tipping is not a gift!
I know that we’re not forced to be servers. Yes, we know the pay scale ó 2007, $3.18 per hour; 2009, $2.13 per hour. That’s right, our wages went down. A corporate-government thing.
As for your tip about getting another job, well, I am looking. Do you have a job you want to offer me? That would be a nice gift.
Customers do have the final decision about the tip. But as Ms. Clark said, it has changed dramatically in the past few months.
Lastly, Wayne, I think I’ve waited on you a few times.
