Area sports briefs: Families, fans invited to Harold B. Jarrett Post to watch game

American Legion Post 342 (Harold B Jarrett) on Lincolnton Road has been asked to provide a place for the parents and friends of the Rowan County Legion players to come and watch the World Series in Fargo, N.D.
The World Series begins Friday. Many were unable to make the trip due to the short turnaround time from the Southeast Regional.
Legion Post 342 is gladly inviting families and fans to the Legion Post to watch the live feed on a big-screen TV.
Fans may also bring laptops and Wi-Fi the Internet from the Legion Post.
The upstairs banquet hall will be open around 8:30 pm.
– Prep football
A number of teams, including West Rowan and Davie County, held opening scrimmages on Wednesday night.
North Rowan swings into action tonight at home.
West Rowan, East Rowan and South Rowan have home scrimmages on Friday, while A.L. Brown goes to Porter Ridge.
The Post’s annual football edition comes out on Aug. 19.
The eight-part series of preseason stories continues with a look at East Rowan on Friday. The Mustangs will be followed by Carson on Saturday and South Rowan on Sunday.
– Local golf
The deadline for the Labor Day Four-Ball tournament has been extended to Aug. 21.
– College basketball
Concord police arrested former Concord basketball standout Danny Nieman on drug charges on Aug. 5.
Nieman, a point guard who keyed Concord’s drive to the 2007 3A state championship, makes his first court appearance on Aug. 27.
Nieman, 19, played a season at Hargrave Military Academy and has signed with Coastal Carolina.
– Minor leagues
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Bristol on Wednesday to raise his average to .279. He also stole his ninth and 10th bases.
* Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) had one hit Wednesday and a pair on Tuesday. He’s batting .275 for Clinton.
– West Middle
West Rowan Middle School fall sports practices will start on the following dates and times.
Players must have a current physical to participate.
* Football and softball: Tuesday, Aug. 18, 4-6 p.m.
* Girls tennis: Tuesday, Aug. 18, 3:30-5 p.m.
– China Grove Middle
China Grove Middle School fall sports practices will start on the following dates and times. Players must have a physical to participate.
* Football: Monday, Aug. 17, 6-8 p.m. Players should report at 5 p.m.
* Girls tennis: Tryouts are Aug. 19 and 21 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.n Softball: Tryouts are Aug. 18 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
