Shelby eliminated Cherryville 10-3 in a matchup of Area IV rivals on Monday in Greenville.
It was sweet revenge for Shelby, which was swept in the Area IV championship series by Cherryville.
Eric Shuford pitched a complete game, and Shelby played one of its best games in weeks, turning three double plays and pounding out 17 hits.
As the top of the third inning ended, there was a 51-minute delay as umpires and Legion officials attempted to make a ruling on whether or not a Shelby run should count during a wild play in which a baserunner crossed home and an inning-ending double play was completed. The run counted.
Wilmington 18, Duplin 10Area II champion Wilmington overcame an early 6-0 deficit to eliminate Duplin in a slugfest in Monday’s early game.
Wilmington banged out 24 hits. Justin Somers and Ryan LaGrange had four hits each. LaGrange hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth, and Post 10 put the game away with a seven-run seventh.
The lengthy game included a 49-minute weather delay.
