Area sports briefs: Frye, Rumple win Warrior crowns

Mooresville’s Mike Frye won the Warrior Club Championship on Sunday, shooting 72 after carding a 71 on Saturday.
Greg Rumple of Kannapolis won the Warrior’s Senior Club Championship with rounds of 83-72 ó 155.

– Rampage wins
The Rowan Rampage semipro football team beat the Triangle Rattlers 34-13 on Saturday in a regular-season CCFL opener. D’Andre Hopper ran for three touchdowns, threw a touchdown pass and kicked two extra points.
The offensive line consisting of Justin Parker, Dorsett Beasley, Mike Singleton, Joe Wingler and Roderick England controlled the game. The Rampage had 386 yards of offense. Willie Hosch rushed eight times for 89 yards. Return man Justin Davis won the field-position battle with 186 all-purpose yards.
Hopper scored on a 1-yard dive three minutes into the game. The TD was set up by a sack and forced fumble by Hakim Pearce. Garette Knight made the recovery.
Later in the first quarter, Hopper got a drive moving with completions of 26 and 12 yards to Justin Davis. Hosch carried 17 yards for the score.
The Rampage led 13-7 at halftime.
Hard running by Hosch and Charles Scott set up a 1-yard run by Hopper for a 19-7 lead, and Anthony Davis bulled over to tack on a two-point conversion.
Hopper’s 34-yard TD pass to James Allen made it 28-7 in the third quarter.
After the Rattlers narrowed the lead to 28-13, the Rampage sealed victory with a long drive keyed by the rushing of Scott, Brandon Walker, Anthony Davis. Hopper got the clinching TD from the 3-yard line with five minutes left.
The Rampage returns to action next Saturday at Knox Middle School with a 4 p.m. game against the Monroe Mustangs.
– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples League played one of its weekly matches. Twenty-two golfers participated with a two-man Captain’s Choice format.
Mark and Samantha Haviland shot 32 for first place. Gene and Mary Seaford shot 33 for second place. Walt and Kim Kincaid finished third with a 34.
Robin Leslie was closest to the pin on No. 3. Pam Broomes made the longest putt on No. 6.
– Local tennis
Michael Childress, 9, won the consolation draw at the Bermuda Run USTA tournament over the weekend. Childress lost in the first round but won his next two matches.
– Spencer Fall League
Spencer Little League will hold registration for its fall baseball and softball leagues July 27-31 from 4-9 and Aug. 5-6 from 4-8 at the Eighth Street Ballpark in Spencer.
The fall league is an instructional league for ages 5-14.
Leagues are Coach Pitch, B League, A League and Junior League. Cost is $30.

– Intimidators win
Veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia stole the show early, and the Kannapolis Intimidators topped the Rome Braves 3-2 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday.
Garcia, a two-time American League All-Star, fired three shutout innings in his first start with the White Sox organization this season. The 33-year-old right-hander induced two double plays and struck out three.
Nevin Griffith (1-2) pitched five innings for the win.
– Minor leagues
Clinton’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) was 2-for-3 in a 4-2 loss against West Michigan on Sunday. Seager is batting .360.
* Kane County outfielder David Thomas (Catawba) has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a fractured little finger.
– Wood bat leagues
Asheboro’s Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) had a game-winning single in the ninth to lift the Copperheads to a 4-3 win against Martinsville on Sunday. Lyerly went 2-for-4 and is batting .340.
* Justin Roland (East, Charlotte) is batting .258 in 22 games for the Bethesda Big Train.
* Whit Merrifield (Davie, South Carolina) is batting .239 in the Cape Cod League.
– East girls tennis
Tryouts for East Rowan girls tennis will be held at the courts behind Erwin Middle School on Aug. 3 from 8-10 a.m.
