High Rock rescue
Ten-year-old Kaylee Thompson is alive today because Mike Marion and Shane Holleman did not mind their own business or look away ó and because they knew CPR.
Kaylee got stuck underwater last Sunday when she became wedged face-down in an inner tube. Marion and Hollemon, who had been watching the girl laugh and have fun riding behind her cousin’s jet ski, noticed she had disappeared. They flagged down the cousin, pulled a blue-faced Kaylee from the water and started giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions. They saved her life.
Kaylee was visiting from Mississippi. Marion and Holleman, who did not know Kaylee or her family, had traveled from Asheboro for some fishing. Their paths crossed on High Rock Lake, and what could have been tragedy became a story of rescue and celebration. Cheers to these men for jumping into action to save a young stranger. For that day, at least, they were wearing angels’ wings.
