Area sports briefs: Former Moor goes to Korea

Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) had his contract purchased from the Houston Astros by the LG Twins, a team in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday.
Johnson, 27, was 5-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 21 games, including 13 starts, for the Triple-A Round Rock Express.
* Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) saved his sixth game for Fort Myers in a 2-1 win against Tampa on Wednesday.
Steedley worked 21/3 innings, allowing one hit and no runs. He lowered his ERA to 1.79.
* Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) was 0-for-4 for Bristol in a 5-0 victory at Burlington on Wednesday. Bristol plays at Burlington tonight at 7 p.m. to wrap up a series. Burlington is the closest Wagner will come to home in the Appalachian League.
Wagner said former teammates Ivan Corriher and Jonathon Basinger, several family members and his church pastor were in the stands in Burlington on Tuesday.
– Intimidators win
Kannapolis won 5-2 against Augusta on Wednesday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
The Intimidators scored all five of their runs with outs.
Eduardo Escobar went 3-for-3 with two triples, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Dexter Carter (6-2) did not allow a run in six innings and struck out nine to push his Minor Leagues-leading total to 138. He’s thrown 15 straight scoreless innings.
– Wood bat leagues
Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) was 2-for-2 in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game as the American and National stars battled to a 2-2 tie in 10 innings.
Lyerly and Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) stole two bases each in the contest.
– East-West football
The East All-Stars topped the West 6-0 on a 5-yard TD run by Steven Moore (Chapel Hill) with 9:11 left to play on Wednesday.
– College softball
Walters State coach Larry Sauceman anticipates catcher Gina Loflin (West Rowan) signing with Catawba after she completes classes at the junior college this fall.
Loflin shared Rowan County Player of the Year honors as a senior at West Rowan. She was a second team all-conference player at Walters State as a sophomore, batting .360 with six homers and 23 RBIs.
– Strongman contest
The J.F. Hurley YMCA plans to hold its first annual Strongman Contest on Aug. 15.
The entry fee is $25. Weigh-in is at 1 p.m. Weight classes are 20 pounds and under, 201-275 and super-heavyweight.
There will be cash prize winners for first and second place in each weight class.
Entrants will compete in five events behind the YMCA. Events are the farmer’s walk, tire flip, deadlift, Atlas Shuttle and bus pull.
Sponsors include Cheerwine, James Davis, Wal-Mart and Fisher Realty.

– Rowan Rangers
The Rowan Rangers 11-under baseball team will hold tryouts July 30 at 6 p.m. at Salisbury Community Park on Hurley School Road.

Tickets for reserve seating at East Rowan football games are now on sale at the school office.
The price is $40 and includes seating for six home games and reserved parking. Extra reserved parking is available for $10.
Seats can be purchased at the school office from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Thursday through Aug. 17. Starting Aug. 18, they can be purchased from 8-4.
– Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer hired Katie Michel as an assistant coach for women’s soccer.
– Hole-in-one
Tom Drescher made his first career hole-in-one at Warrior Golf Club on Monday. He aced the 151-yard No. 6 hole with a 9-iron.
The shot was witnessed by Mac Ervin and Jeff Vogels.
