Area Sports Briefs: Carter leads Intimidators

Dexter Carter put the Kannapolis Intimidators on his back Thursday night at Savannah in a 2-0 win over the Sand Gnats for a series split.
Carter (5-2) matched his season high, going eight innings without allowing a run. The right-hander maintained his league lead in strikeouts. He fanned nine for a season total to 129.
Brandon Short gave the Intimidators a lead in the second, driving in Dan Black with a two-out double. Jon Gilmore had the only other RBI in the contest.
The series proved to be a battle of the pitching staffs, with the two teams combining for only 13 runs in the four-game set.
Dan Remenowksy got the final three outs, including a pair of strikeouts, for his 13th save of the season.
– Minor leagues
Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning for Fort Myers on Thursday in a 13-4 romp over Sarasota and lowered his ERA to 1.77.
* David Thomas (Catawba) had two hits for Kane County in Thursday’s 3-0 victory against South Bend in the Midwest League.
* Bristol’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had one hit and his 17th RBI in a 10-6 loss against Bluefield on Thursday. He’s batting .291.
* Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) was the losing pitcher in Round Rock’s 7-5, 14-inning setback against Oklahoma City on Thursday. Johnson (5-8) pitched three shutout innings before allowing two runs in the 14th.
– Wood bat leagues
Bethesda’s Justin Roland (East Rowan, Charlotte) was 3-for-4 in Thursday’s 9-0 win against Rockville in the Cal Ripken Sr. League.
* Craige Lyerly (East, Catawba) scored twice in Thursday’s 9-8 Coastal Plain League win against Martinsville.
– Legion playoffs
Mooresville kept its hopes alive in its Area III semifinal playoff series, beating High Point 8-5 in Game 3.
The home victory forced Game 4 in High Point on Saturday. Scheduling conflicts at Finch Field with the Coastal Plain League forced the teams to take tonight off.
– Major leagues
New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) allowed seventh-inning singles to Martin Prado and Chipper Jones, the only batters he faced, on Thursday night.
Parnell wasn’t charge with any runs. The Braves won 5-3.
– Rowan Amateur
Match-play pairings are set for today’s Rowan Amateur. See Scoreboard.
– Hole-in-one
Lester Shelton made a hole-in-one on the 155-yard No. 2 at Corbin Hills.
He used a 3-wood to record his first ace just three days before his 70th birthday.
Gary Stephenson, Richard Suggs and Avery Suggs witnessed the feat.
– Junior Mac tourney
The third Junior Mac Golf Tournament of the summer was held at McCanless on Thursday.
The results were as follows:
10-13 age division: 1st: Tyler Mulkey (41), Second; Justin Allen (42); Third: Nick Lyerly (44); Fourth: Levi Strickland (58).
7-9 age division: First: Bryson Sprinkle (42); Second: Michael Childress (46).
6 & Under division (6 holes): First: Landon Shuping (31); Second: Charlie Barr (33); Third: Gaven Sprinkle (33); Fourth: Brodie Perry (42).
Closest to Pin: 10-13 Tyler Mulkey; 7-9 Michael Childress.
– Local golf
The eGolf Tour’s fifth annual Southern Open is being contested this week at The Club at Irish Creek and Warrior Golf Club.
Former Ohio State golfer Colin Biles recorded a hole-in-one on No. 12 at Warrior on Thursday on his way to a sizzling 64.
Biles’ two-day total of 130 gives him a one-shot lead in the event.
