Andrew Burgess is only nine years old but he already holds the title of fastest in the country.
Of all the youth track regionals, his 2:40.48 in the sub-bantam 800 meters has him at the top. He beat his personal best by seven seconds.
Burgess is one of 12 Rowan athletes who qualified for the National AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa.
Other local runners qualifying were: Jabari Dalton, Payton Russell, Jaleesa Smoot, Juniata Leto, Alisha Bradshaw, Justin Avery, Andrea Godfrey, Okera Dalton, Cameron Dunlap, Dasia McGill and Tavis Bailey.
n Youth football
The Rowan County Youth Football League recently held its monthly meeting.
Registration for the upcoming season will be Aug. 29-Sept. 5.
R.C.Y.F.L. a non-profit league, serves Rowan County football players and cheerleaders in grades 3-6.
Teams are formed by school attendance. Registration is $80.
The league is asking for volunteer football and cheerleading coaches from all corners of the county. Criminal background checks are required of all volunteers.
North Rowan and West Rowan High are again locked in as game sites. Sponsors are needed for several teams.
n Triathlon training
The East Rowan YMCA is holding a triathlon training camp for kids third grade through eighth. Camp dates are July 20-24, and the run from 9 a.m. until noon. Kids will receive individual instruction in swimming, running, and biking. the camp will close with a triathlon competition on Friday.
Registration includes a dri-fit shirt and speed laces. The cost is $60 for YMCA members and $90 for non-members. It includes a dri-fit shirt and speed laces.
