Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators win

Stephen Sauer allowed two runs in six innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators won 4-2 at Hagerstown on Tuesday.
The Intimidators are 7-3 this season in games started by Sauer (5-2). He had seven strikeouts.
Charlis Burdie pitched two perfect innings of relief, and Dan Remenowsky earned his 11th save with a perfect ninth.
Kannapolis’ runs came on three RBI groundouts and one throwing error.
* Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 0-for-3 but scored one run and had one RBI in Bristol’s 8-7 loss to Elizabethton on Tuesday. Wagner drew two walks.
* David Thomas (Catawba) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI in Kane County’s 4-3 victory against Peoria on Tuesday.
Thomas doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and scored the game-winning run on a single in the next at-bat.
– American Legion baseball
The American Legion baseball playoff pairings have been released, and best-of-five series openers are scheduled for Friday at the home field of the higher seed.
Top-seeded Rowan County will face eighth-seeded Mocksville-Davie, and second-seeded South Rowan will play seventh-seeded Wilkes.
Third-seeded Mooresville will meet sixth-seeded Concord, and fourth-seeded Stanly will square off against fifth-seeded Lexington-Davidson.
A tie for third place was seeded based on head-to-head records in the three-team loop for Mooresville (3-1), Stanly (2-2) and Lexington (1-3). A tie for seventh was seeded based on head-to-head records in the three-team loop for Wilkes (3-1), Mocksville (2-2) and Kannapolis (1-3).
– Hoops Unlimited
Applications are being accepted for both sessions of the 16th annual Hoops Unlimited Basketball Camp at Erwin Middle School.
The camp from July 6-9 is for boys and girls who will be in grades 2-5. The camp from July 13-16 is for boys and girls who will be in grades 6-9.
The cost of the all-day camp is $95 and includes a camp shirt and “all you can eat” lunch each day. For a brochure or other information, contact Rick Roseman at 704-279-7334.

Former Carson-Newman men’s soccer coach Stephen Jones, 44, passed away Saturday after a bout with cancer.
– Hole-in-one
Darlene Perkins had a hole-in-one recently at the Crescent Golf Club. The ace was recorded on No. 5 from the red tees. She used a 4-iron on the 122-yard hole.
– Junior Open
The deadline for the second annual Rowan Junior Open is Thursday. There are a few spots still available. The tournament will be held at Irish Creek on Monday and at The Warrior on Tuesday.n Corbin Hills Ladies Golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association hosted its annual member-guest event Tuesday.
Low net went to the team of Becky Isenhour and Bert Wagoner. Second net went to Cindy Carmazzi and Kathy Carlton, while third net went to Anna Robinson and Dolly Canup. Ruth Bowles and Lillian Pidkameny claimed fourth net.Low gross went to Beth Calhoun and Susan Mershon. Second gross went to Phyllis Durland and Patti Mason.
